BoxFit 3D helps customers build product boxes in your Shopify storefront. Shoppers can select products manually, ask BoxFit to fill the remaining space automatically, and view the resulting arrangement in 3D.
Getting started
How do I set up BoxFit 3D?
- Open BoxFit 3D from Shopify admin.
- Select Box products and choose the Shopify products or variants you sell as physical boxes.
- Enter the interior dimensions of each box.
- Open Product data and enter the dimensions of products that customers can place inside a box.
- Open Setup guide and select Activate storefront widget.
- In the Shopify theme editor, enable Box builder widget, choose its position, and save the theme.
- Test the experience on your storefront before making it available to customers.
Do I need to create special box products?
BoxFit uses regular Shopify products or variants as boxes. Create each box as a Shopify product, then select it under Box products and enter its usable interior dimensions.
Can one product offer multiple box sizes?
Yes. Create each box size as a variant of the same Shopify product—for example, Small, Medium, and Large. In BoxFit, configure each variant separately with its own interior dimensions, fitting allowance, and optional weight capacity. Each variant counts as an active box configuration under your plan.
Why isn’t the BoxFit widget appearing on my storefront?
Check the following:
- Open Online Store → Themes → Customize.
- Select App embeds in the theme editor.
- Confirm that Box builder widget is enabled.
- Click Save after enabling it.
- Make sure at least one active box product is configured in BoxFit.
- Confirm that your products have complete packing dimensions.
- Test the published theme, not only an unpublished theme preview.
If you recently changed themes, you must enable the app embed in the new theme.
Box and product measurements
Which measurements does BoxFit require?
Every box and packable product needs a positive:
- Length
- Width
- Height
If weight capacity is enabled for a box, packable products must also have a positive BoxFit weight.
Products missing required measurements are excluded from automatic filling.
Should I enter interior or exterior box dimensions?
Enter the box’s usable interior dimensions. BoxFit uses these measurements to determine whether products physically fit inside the box.
What is fitting allowance?
Fitting allowance reserves space inside a box for padding, dividers, tissue paper, or measurement variation.
The allowance is subtracted once from every box dimension. For example, a 24 × 24 × 24-inch box with a 2-inch fitting allowance has an effective packing capacity of 22 × 22 × 22 inches.
The fitting allowance must be smaller than every box dimension.
Does BoxFit support metric and imperial measurements?
Yes. BoxFit follows the store’s Shopify measurement system and supports common metric and imperial units.
CSV imports support:
- Dimensions:
in,ft,yd,mm,cm, andm - Weight:
oz,lb,g, andkg
What happens when product and variant measurements are both entered?
Complete variant measurements override the product’s shared measurements. If a variant does not have its own complete measurements, BoxFit uses the product-level values as a fallback.
Customer experience
How does automatic filling work?
BoxFit considers the selected box’s remaining space, eligible products, inventory, customer preferences, and any configured budget or weight limit.
Products already selected by the customer are placed first. BoxFit then fills only the remaining space without replacing those selections.
Can customers add products manually?
Yes. Customers can manually assign eligible products to a box or use automatic filling. Products selected manually remain separate from products suggested by BoxFit.
What does “Try another mix” do?
Try another mix replaces only the products suggested by BoxFit. Products manually selected by the customer remain in the box.
The number of alternate mixes available depends on your plan.
What happens if a customer buys more than one box?
Every physical box receives its own identity, such as Gift Box #1 and Gift Box #2. Products are assigned to a specific box so their contents remain separate in the cart and order.
Can customers add ordinary products outside a box?
Yes. Products that are not assigned to a box remain ordinary cart items. They do not count against box capacity and are not blocked by BoxFit’s packing rules.
Does BoxFit check inventory?
Yes. BoxFit excludes tracked variants that are unavailable and cannot be oversold under their Shopify inventory policy.
Shopify’s cart validation remains the final inventory check, so availability can still change while a customer is shopping.
Why couldn’t BoxFit fill the entire box?
A complete fill might not be possible when:
- Eligible products do not fit in the remaining space.
- Products are missing dimensions or required weights.
- Inventory is unavailable.
- The customer’s budget is too low.
- The box’s weight capacity has been reached.
- Product eligibility or Fill Preference rules exclude available products.
- Per-variant quantity limits prevent additional copies.
BoxFit will not remove products manually selected by the customer just to create a different arrangement.
Product data and CSV imports
Can I import product measurements in bulk?
Yes, CSV import is available on the Standard and Pro plans.
Open Import CSV in BoxFit to download the template. The importer supports UTF-8 CSV files up to 2 MB and 2,500 data rows.
BoxFit validates the complete file and shows a preview before making changes.
How does the CSV importer identify products and variants?
The product is identified by its Shopify handle.
- Leave Variant SKU blank to update shared product measurements.
- Enter a Variant SKU to update that exact variant.
- Variant SKUs must be unique within the product.
- Blank packing cells leave existing values unchanged.
- Enter
CLEARto remove existing dimensions or weight.
Shipping
Does BoxFit calculate shipping rates?
No. Shipping zones, profiles, and rates remain managed by Shopify under Settings → Shipping and delivery.
Box products can use your general shipping profile or a custom shipping profile.
Which weight does Shopify use for shipping?
Shopify uses the native weight configured on each Shopify product variant when calculating shipping.
BoxFit’s packing weight is used only to determine whether contents exceed a box’s configured weight capacity. It does not replace the Shopify shipping weight.
For a box product, set its Shopify variant weight to the weight of the empty packaging.

How do I change or cancel my plan?
Open BoxFit 3D → Plans, then select Manage plan on Shopify. Shopify displays the available plans and manages subscription approval, changes, and cancellation.
Orders and fulfillment
Can BoxFit show how an order should be packed?
Pro includes packed-order history and printable, layer-by-layer pack patterns. Open Packed orders in BoxFit to view available packing information.
Why isn’t an order appearing under Packed orders?
Check that:
- The order was completed after BoxFit was installed and configured.
- It contains products packed through the BoxFit storefront widget.
- You are using the Pro plan.
- The order has finished processing in Shopify.
Troubleshooting
Why is a product excluded from automatic filling?
Confirm that the product:
- Has positive length, width, and height measurements.
- Has a positive BoxFit weight when weight enforcement is enabled.
- Is enabled for automatic filling.
- Matches the active Fill Preference, if one is selected.
- Is available for sale and has sufficient inventory.
- Fits within the box’s remaining dimensions, weight, and budget.
- Has not reached its per-variant quantity limit.
What should I do if BoxFit displays an unexpected error?
- Refresh Shopify admin and reopen BoxFit.
- Confirm that a BoxFit plan is active.
- Check that the storefront widget remains enabled.
- Retry the action in a private browser window.
- If the error continues, contact BoxFit support with:
- Your
.myshopify.comstore domain - The page or action that failed
- The approximate time of the error
- A screenshot or short screen recording
- Whether the issue began after installation, reinstallation, a theme change, or a plan change
- Your
Do not send customer information, passwords, Shopify access tokens, or payment details.
What happens if I uninstall and reinstall BoxFit?
On uninstall, BoxFit immediately removes authentication sessions and temporary packing data. Shopify separately manages cancellation of the app subscription.
Some merchant configuration may be retained during Shopify’s reinstall grace period so the store can recover its setup after reinstalling. If Shopify later sends its required shop-redaction request, the remaining shop data is permanently deleted.
After reinstalling:
- Open BoxFit from Shopify admin.
- Confirm your plan under Plans.
- Review your box and product measurements.
- Confirm that Box builder widget is enabled in the current theme.
- Run a storefront test before resuming customer use.
Privacy and data retention
What customer data does BoxFit store?
