How to Set Up BoxFit 3D on Your Shopify Store

BoxFit 3D helps shoppers build product bundles that fit inside the boxes you sell. It considers each product's dimensions and weight, then shows customers which products can be packed together. After an order is placed, your fulfillment team receives a visual, layer-by-layer packing pattern.

This guide walks you through the complete setup process from choosing a plan and configuring your boxes to testing the storefront experience and viewing packing instructions.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

• Installed BoxFit 3D on your Shopify store.
• Created a Shopify product for every box you want customers to use.
• Recorded the length, width, height, and weight of your products.
• Created, or planned to create, a Shopify collection containing your box products.

Accurate measurements are important. BoxFit 3D uses the information you provide to decide whether products fit within a box's available space and weight limit.

1. Choose a plan

When you first open BoxFit 3D, you will see the Plan and billing page. If you have not selected a plan yet, click Manage plan on Shopify.

BoxFit 3D offers three plans: Basic, Standard, and Pro. Each includes a 14-day free trial. During the trial, you can use Pro features and explore the app's full capabilities before deciding which plan best fits your store.

Select a plan, review the charge in Shopify, and click Approve. After the plan is activated, BoxFit 3D will take you to the setup guide.

2. Configure your box products

From the setup guide, click Configure box products. Select the Shopify products that represent the boxes you want to make available for packing.

Configure the following settings for each box:

Box dimensions

Enter the box's length, width, and height using the correct unit of measurement. Use the box's usable internal dimensions rather than its external shipping dimensions so BoxFit 3D does not overestimate the available space.

Available for box packing

Enable Available for box packing. Only enabled box products can be recognized and used by the box builder.

Fitting allowance

The fitting allowance creates padding on each side of the box. This reduces the usable packing area and helps prevent combinations that would be too tight in practice.

For example, you might set a 1-inch fitting allowance when products need clearance or protective packing material. Choose an allowance that reflects the way your fulfillment team actually packs orders.

Maximum weight

Enable a maximum weight limit if a box or shipping service has a safe weight capacity. BoxFit 3D will stop adding products when either the available physical space or the maximum weight is reached.

Maximum quantity per product variant

This setting controls how many units of the same product variant BoxFit 3D may select during automatic filling.

• Set it to 1 if every automatically selected product should be unique.
• Set it to 2 or more if shoppers may receive multiple units of the same variant.

This limit applies to automatic product selection. Choose a value that matches the bundle experience you want to offer.

Repeat the process for every box, then click Save products.

3. Add dimensions and weights to your products

Return to the setup guide and click Open product data. This page lists the active products in your Shopify store.

BoxFit 3D needs dimensions for each product variant before it can determine whether that item fits inside a box. If you set maximum box weights, each variant should also have an accurate weight.

You can update variants individually, but a CSV import is faster for a large catalog.

Import product data with a CSV file

1. Click Import CSV.
2. Download the CSV template.
3. Add the required packing information without changing the template's column structure. The template includes product handle, variant, SKU, length, width, height, dimension unit, weight, weight unit, and eligibility.
4. Save the completed file as a CSV.
5. Return to BoxFit 3D, select the file, and click Preview.
6. Review the preview carefully. Confirm that dimensions, measurement units, weights, weight units, and eligibility are correct.
7. Click Import packing data.

Large imports may take a few minutes. When the import finishes, return to Product data and confirm that the dimensions and weights appear on your product variants.

Use the eligibility field to prevent products from being selected by automatic filling when they should not be included. Before continuing, correct any missing measurements, inconsistent units, or unintended eligibility settings.

4. Create fill preferences

Fill preferences let shoppers guide the products BoxFit 3D selects for them. A preference can be based on:

• Shopify collections
• Vendors
• Product types
• Product tags
• Minimum or maximum product prices

For example, you could create a Bags preference linked to a bags collection and an Electronics preference linked to an electronics collection. Shoppers can then ask BoxFit 3D to fill a box using eligible products from the category they prefer.

Create the preferences that make sense for your catalog, then click Save fill preferences.

Keep preference names short and customer-friendly. A shopper should understand what each option means without knowing how your Shopify catalog is organized.

5. Activate the storefront widget

Return to the setup guide and click Activate storefront widget. The box builder widget should already be enabled.

Expand the widget settings and find Box collection link. Select the Shopify collection that contains your box products, then click Save.

We recommend creating a dedicated box collection page. It gives shoppers a clear place to choose a box and add it to their cart before they begin packing.

6. Test the customer experience

Click View your online store and look for the round BoxFit 3D widget. The exact appearance may vary slightly with your Shopify theme.

Open the widget. The box builder will be empty until a customer adds a configured box product to the cart. To test the full flow:

1. Open your box collection.
2. Add one of your configured box products to the cart.
3. Open the BoxFit 3D widget again.
4. Confirm that the box appears as available.
5. Click Open box builder.

Test automatic filling

Inside the builder, choose how BoxFit 3D should select products:

• Surprise me allows the app to choose from any eligible product.
• A fill preference limits the selection to the criteria you configured, such as Bags or Electronics.
• A minimum or maximum budget lets the shopper control the value of the resulting bundle.

Select an option and click Fill this box. BoxFit 3D calculates which eligible products fit within the box's remaining dimensions and weight allowance.

The builder updates the remaining space, remaining weight capacity, and total product value in real time. A box is considered at capacity when it reaches either its spatial or weight limit—even if the other measurement still shows room.

Review the selected products, including their quantities, prices, dimensions, and weights. Click Try another mix to generate a different selection.

Test removing and refilling products

Remove a product from the box. The item should remain in the cart and move to Products outside boxes.

Click Fill this box again. BoxFit 3D keeps the products that are already packed and searches for eligible items that fit within the remaining capacity.

Test multiple boxes and manual packing

Click Add another box, add a different configured box product to the cart, and reopen the widget. You should now see both boxes and the capacity status of each.

You can manually move eligible cart products from Products outside boxes into a box. Boxes without enough remaining capacity are disabled for that item. Products added through your regular storefront also appear in Products outside boxes, where the shopper can pack them manually.

After manually adding products, the shopper can still click Fill this box to fill the remaining capacity automatically.

7. Verify the cart and checkout

Close the box builder and open the shopping cart. Confirm that:

• The cart contains each box product and all selected individual products.
• Each box shows how many cart items are packed inside it.
• Each packed product identifies the box it belongs to.
• Products intentionally left outside boxes are shown correctly.

Complete a test checkout using your store's normal test-order process. This is the best way to verify the complete experience before introducing BoxFit 3D to customers.

8. Review packing patterns for fulfillment

After a packed order is created, open Packed orders in the BoxFit 3D admin. Select the order and click Print pack pattern.

BoxFit 3D creates a visual packing pattern for each box in the order. The instructions show how products should be placed inside the box, layer by layer. Start with the first layer, then continue through the remaining layers in order.

Print the patterns or keep them available digitally for your fulfillment team. Following the calculated arrangement helps staff reproduce the customer's packed box accurately and efficiently.

Launch checklist

Before announcing the box-building experience to customers, confirm that:

• Your BoxFit 3D plan is active.
• Every box product has accurate internal dimensions and is enabled for box packing.
• Fitting allowances and maximum weights reflect real fulfillment constraints.
• Product variants have accurate dimensions, weights, units, and eligibility settings.
• Fill preferences return the types of products shoppers expect.
• The widget links to the correct box collection.
• Automatic filling, manual packing, multiple boxes, the cart, and checkout all work in your live theme.
• Your fulfillment team can find, understand, and print packing patterns.
